The Miami Dolphins locked up safety T.J. McDonald on a four year, $24 million contract extension, a league source said.

The Dolphins signed McDonald as a free agent this offseason, but he’ll be suspended for the first eight games of this season due to an off-field incident.

McDonald has been extremely impressive to Miami coaches in practice and in preseason games.

The pairing of McDonald and Reshad Jones could create one of the best safety tandems in the NFL.

McDonald, 6-feet-2, 217 pounds, has played five seasons for the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams.

McDonald is known as a hard-hitter but he he’s shown better speed and coverage skills than advertised.

The NFL’s suspension of McDonald is due to suspicion of driving under the influence of prescription drugs.
