Miami Dolphins’ Rey Maualuga not scheduled to play tonight (league source)

Minneapolis — Miami Dolphins linebacker Rey Maualuga is not scheduled to play tonight in the preseason finale at the Vikings, according to a league source.

Maualuga has been working hard to get into playing shape.

On Tuesday, coach Adam Gase said: “Today, we didn’t do any reps in practice. We’re just trying to slowly get him going in individual. We’ve got a workout plan for him. He’s been doing a lot of work with (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Dave) Puloka. We’ll see how he feels tonight and (Wednesday) and then if we can get him some reps (against Minnesota), that would be great.”

The Dolphins signed Maualuga to a one-year contract 12 days ago.

Maualuga, 30, is an eight-year NFL veteran and it is expected he’ll play a role in the middle of Miami’s defense for the season-opener against Tampa Bay in 10 days.

Without Maualuga, the Dolphins will rely more on youngsters Mike Hull, Deon Lacey and Chase Allen tonight.

It is possible, but not a certainty, all three of those players make Miami’s final 53-man roster.
