Miami Dolphins’ Jakeem Grant: ‘Big guy stuck in a little guy’s body’

DAVIE — That play against the Eagles — the one in which Jakeem Grant was sandwiched between two defensive backs and lived to both tell about it and score — surprised everybody but the star of the moment.

“I’m just a big guy stuck in a little guy’s body,” Grant said Tuesday.

At least the second part of that is undeniable. Grant is listed by the Dolphins at 5-feet-7 and 169 pounds, meaning both their kicker and punter have 5 inches and a minimum of 20 pounds on him.

But if you want to throw numbers at Grant, the big guy in the little body has a few to heave back at you. And heave, he can.

“I rep out at 315,” Grant said of his bench press. “A lot of people don’t notice that.”

Even though he’s a track guy, Grant builds up his legs just as much.

“I was a 600-pound squat guy at Texas Tech,” he said. “I just love doing it.”

That heavy lifting, fans never see. The results? Another story. Take that aforementioned 69-yard touchdown against Philadelphia.
