Adam Gase: Jay Cutler ‘fresh and excited’ for Miami Dolphins debut

DAVIE — Jay Cutler signed with the Dolphins less than a month ago and completed only eight passes in preseason. He sat out the preseason finale against Minnesota.

So is he ready for the opener vs. Tampa Bay?

“I feel good,” coach Adam Gase said Monday.

Gase said he feels comfortable because Cutler cleared the biggest hurdle they were concerned with, given that he was coming out of retirement: pocket presence.

“Just the feel in the pocket, getting used to bodies being around him,” Gase said. “It seems like (his) arm’s in good enough shape where the throws, as we’ve gone along, it’s been more and more throws, and he’s back in that condition.”

Cutler wasn’t signed until after Ryan Tannehill wrecked his knee, but Gase thinks that could be an advantage.

“I think the spring and missing that first part of training camp probably helped him,” Gase said. “When you get there at 34 years old, the more balls you throw, it kind of wears on you as the year goes on when you start in the spring. It seems like he’s fresh and excited, ready to go.”
